In the summer of 2004 discussions began among Gananoque Town Councillors and staff, the Canadian Antique Boat Museum Trust and Antique Boat Museum Clayton staff and directors regarding the possibility of building an antique boat museum along the waterfront in Gananoque (ABMGananoque).

After two delegation visits from Gananoque to the ABMClayton, the establishment of an ABMG Advisory Committee (which included the mayor and three town councilors, ABMG consultants and ABM Clayton staff and representatives of the Trust) after numerous meetings of this Advisory Committee, a study of the Gananoque Lower Town and a Feasibility Analysis of the ABMGananoque all of which have taken place over the past three and half years, an Antique Boat Museum (ABM Gananoque) is proposed for the Lower Town area of Gananoque.

SiteA facility in Gananoque built with an equivalent commitment to quality that is found at the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton New York is being proposed Those backing the project strongly believe in helping make this facility a cornerstone of the economic, social and environmental renaissance of the Lower Town area and to the benefit of the entire Town of Gananoque. ABMGananoque is proposing to develop its Gananoque facility along a portion of the Gananoque waterfront in three phases. ABMGananoque will take the form of a not-for-profit corporation with its own governance structure. An agency agreement will exist between ABMGananoque and ABM Clayton that will govern the relationship between the two organizations and allow for elements of the collections to be moved between the two museums.
